Top Gear S28E6 | A Moving Nod to McRae

Updated: May 2, 2020

This short post refers to sections within Top Gear Season 28 Episode 6. It is not necessary to watch the episode before reading, but it may help for context.

On the latest series of Top Gear, Chris Harris creates a segment for the show around the life and career of iconic Scottish rally driver Colin McRae. This was a very nostalgic segment for me, and I'm sure for many rally fans.

McRae hit the scene around 1995, just a year after I was born. I grew up watching him do ridiculous things in cars. I would absolutely say that he is one of the reasons I loved cars as a kid, and the main reason I loved rally so much.

I grew up playing Colin McRae Rally as a kid and sunk many many hours (to the dismay of my parents) into that game. I would only ever drive the 555 Subaru or the iconic Ford Focus, they were always my favourites.

The car is as iconic as the man who drove it, As Harris puts it, its a true four wheeled hero. McRae managed to take a hot family saloon and make it a young boys pin up car. Every young car nut of my age grew up wanting an Impreza when they grew up. Hell, I still do!

I think something good about the Impreza is that it has never been to out of bounds for any enthusiast. Average examples of the WRX can be picked up for around £4000 with WRX STI's fetching £7-8000, though it's always worth doing a thorough check on the service history if you are in the market for one. The older "Classic" cars are beginning to become just that, classic. A well looked after Impreza P1 Limited Edition will set you back around £30,000 while a Japanese imported WRX would be around the £12-15,000 mark.

To this day, it's difficult for an Impreza to bellow down the road without me turning my head and getting just a little nostalgic. It's incredible that he was able to take a hotted up four door family car and do the things he did with it. I am a huge fan of Harris' work, he's been an inspiration for the creation of this blog. So it was great to see him so passionate about McRae and how personal it felt to him from an audience (my) perspective.
